Of the many native peoples inhabiting the Great Eastern Forest in what is now the United States, the Hopewell Culture, spanning 50 BCE to 400 CE was one of the most artistic and geographically influential. Of the Hopewell earthwork complexes, the Great Portsmouth Works was by far the largest, and of all the Hopewell-era mounds, Tremper Mound was among the most significant. During this weekend, we will be honoring our Appalachian lands’ legacies, with a special focus on the last two thousand years.

Whether here for the weekend or the day, be sure to preregister and choose your field trip preferences. If you prefer, you can call in your registration at 937-365-1935. If you find at any point that you can no longer come, please call or write us at arcpreserveinfo@gmail.com to cancel so we can anticipate attendance for food and seating purposes.

Where is the event? Simon Farm and Tremper Mound lie roughly five miles north of Portsmouth, Ohio in Scioto County and we will spend considerable time at both preserves. They are two miles apart as the crow flies. Tremper Mound is the main event hub on Sunday.

If coming for the weekend, secure your lodging ASAP. We have set aside lodge rooms and a few cabins at Shawnee Lodge for the Donor Gathering. Shawnee Lodge is a 25-minute drive away from Tremper Mound Preserve. To make a reservation, call (800) 282-7275 and be sure to mention “Arc Donor Gathering” so that you don’t accidentally get blocked out. Although Shawnee Lodge is undoubtedly the most beautiful lodging option in the area, you can also stay in downtown Portsmouth, which is slightly closer to our preserves and offers many meal options. We are still determining where our evening programs will be held. They will likely be at the Southern Ohio Museum in Portsmouth or at Shawnee Lodge. As soon as we know we will update the website.

Are there any expenses I need to cover? All program offerings for the entire weekend, including breakfast and lunch on Saturday and Sunday, are free of charge. This event is by invitation only to our donors, but please feel welcome to bring 1-2 invited guests. Lodging and dinners on Friday and Saturday evenings are at the attendee’s expense.

What to Bring:  We will supply tables, trays, mugs, and chairs. Please bring a place setting that includes a soup bowl, plate, utensils, and bottled water. We will supply washing stations for all meals so you can carry home clean dishes.

Menu: The menu for all provided meals is included in the Schedule. We can accommodate vegan and gluten-free preferences.

Directions: As we get closer to the event, we will confirm all registrants’ field trip destinations as well as directions to all program destinations.
