Overview

Keynote Speaker - Chelsea Gottfried: “Mysterious Moths.”

Come join us and other nature inspired women for the Spring Women’s Walk in the Woods as we welcome our guest speaker Chelsea Gottfried, co-author of the book, “Gardening for Moths”.

Chelsea will speak about moths, which along with butterflies, are part of a group of insects known as lepidopterans - meaning 'scaly wings'. It is these overlapping scales that give them their spectacular colors and patterns. At the end of her presentation, Chelsea will be answering questions from the audience and have a book sale and signing.

We will meet at the Appalachian Forest Museum for Chelsea’s presentation and a bring-your-own picnic lunch before heading out to hike one of the beautiful trails near the Highlands Nature Sanctuary.

Bring your female friends and family to meet new people, learn about Ohio’s moths and what we can do to support them, and enjoy nature.

Make it a weekend trip by reserving one of our lodges today! Lodging at Highlands Nature Sanctuary | Arc of Appalachia.

Schedule

10:30 am: Sign in and get to know each other at the Appalachian Forest Museum.

11:00 am: Program Begins with Guest Speaker Chelsea Gottfried as she discusses “Mysterious Moths.”

Chelsea Gottfried works as a Naturalist and Nature-based Preschool Teacher for the Crawford Park District in north central Ohio. She is an avid native gardener and a passionate entomologist as well as the co-author of Gardening for Moths: A Regional Guide.

Chelsea’s presentation, “Mysterious Moths”, will focus on moths and the plants that support them. Though seldom seen due to their nocturnal nature, moths are every bit as beautiful and charismatic as their butterfly cousins. Their role as pollinators is essential to the survival of many of our plants, especially orchids. Most importantly, moths and their caterpillars are food for birds, bats, and countless other animals. We will take a photographic journey into the intriguing world of moths, exploring which of our native plants are most enticing to these lovely Lepidopterans. We can all greatly benefit the ecosystem around us by “moth gardening” in our yards!

12:00 -12:45 pm: Enjoy a bring-your-own picnic lunch in the company of fellow hikers.

1:00 – 4:00 pm: Naturalist led hike (select a first, second, and third choice for your hike during the registration process.)
