14th Annual Wildflower Pilgrimage 

Friday- Sunday, April 12 – 14, 2019

The Pilgrimage is the Arc’s largest, oldest and most popular annual event. Staged at the Highlands Nature Sanctuary, it is a weekend that salutes the most stunning wildflower displays in all of Ohio. The event offers two days of naturalist-guided field trips to the finest floral showcases in south-central Ohio, two evening programs, and full meals – some of the most delicious meals imaginable! It also provides and great company as together we share our love of nature  and immerse ourselves in Ohio’s most breathtaking of all its natural spectacles. Details coming soon!

Birds by Song - Bird Identification & Ecology
Friday evening - mid-day Tuesday, June 7 - 11, 2019

This is an in-depth course that teaches you to learn and remember the songs, calls and field identification skills of the breeding birds in in America’s Eastern forest heartland, as well as their natural history and ecology. Gaining such skills requires lots of time in the field, patient repetition, good learning aides, and positive reinforcement - attributes that are not often found in casual bird walks with birders, but will be bountifully present in this course. Friday evening - mid-day Tuesday, June 7 - 11, 2019

Immerse yourself in Eastern America's most enchanting nature spectacle and learn the illuminating language of fireflies..Two consecutive nights of field trips - with days free to rest and explore the Sanctuary on your own - will teach you the primary species and species complexes that are in courtship during this peak week of firefly activity. In addition to learning to recognize the distinct flash patterns of each species, you will also learn about firefly conservation, ecology, and natural history.  Your world will never be the same! More details coming...

Learn field identification of the captivating butterfly species calling the eastern prairies and forests home. Butterflies are diurnal, large, and to people – stunningly beautiful and rich in metaphor. Studying their identification and natural history during this weekend will illustrate the everyday miracles of metamorphosis, cryptic camouflage, color/pattern mimicry, chemical warfare and seduction, gender roles, and inter-species relationships. This course is led by John Howard, accomplished naturalist, teacher, and Lepidoptera enthusiast. Details coming soon!

The Tree Course - Trees of the Great Eastern Forest - Field Recognition

Wed evening thru mid-day Sunday, July 10-14, 2019

This in-depth residential course will teach you to recognize the most wide-spread trees of the Eastern United States. You will be taught the skills to identify a species in the far distance, up-close with leaves in hand, and by the bark when a tree’s leaves are too high in the canopy to clearly see. Topics of forest ecology, natural history and conservation are embedded in this thoroughly field-oriented curriculum with a chance to practice many times over. By course’s end you will be able to identify 90% of the tree species in the East-central forests from mid New York to Georgia. Held at the Highlands Nature Sanctuary. Details Coming Soon!

Wed evening thru mid-day Sunday, July 10-14, 2019

Field Identification and Ecology of Signature Plants of Native Eastern Prairie Islands

Friday Evening thru mid-day Sunday, August 9-11, 2019

Prairies once ruled the central heartland of North America, but prairie islands have long been scattered across the Eastern United States in an uneasy alliance with the forests, enlarging and shrinking in times of drought and high rainfall. Learn the difference between short grass and tall grass prairies, both in species composition and the creative forces that build and maintain them. The Eastern Prairie Islands are botanically rich ecosystems with diverse specie assemblages unique to the East. Details Coming Soon!
