Exploring the Earthworks of Fort Hill

Hopewell Culture NHP and Heartland Earthworks Conservancy co-sponsor this day-long guided exploration of the earthworks of Fort Hill, including the rarely visited Circle Earthwork, followed by an afternoon presentation by Dr. Jarrod Burks.

Learn how to identify, collect, and process natural materials to make cordage for hand weaving baskets as our ancestors created. Participants will take home their own handmade basket, made in the traditional style.

Ancient Skills: Firemaking & Coal Burning

June 16, 2012 - Fort Hill

Being able to create a bow and drill and use it to make a fire is one of the most impressive and potentially useful ancient skills. In this workshop, learn how to master firemaking, and how to use hot coals to create wooden spoons and bowls.

The Appalachian Forest School presents an introduction to the ecology and natural history of the North Woods. Learn in the field, on site in the Border Lakes region, lead by a team of the finest expert naturalists and educators in the region.

Ferns & Fern Allies of the Forest Heartland

July 30-August 3, 2012 - Beechcliff Learning Center at the Highlands Nature Sanctuary

There has never been a course like this one. Spend a week in the field with two expert naturalists to become acquainted with the recognition, ecological niches, and natural history of approximately 50 ferns and fern allies native to the Eastern Forest heartland.

Fall Women's Retreat

2012 Dates to be Announced - Highlands Nature Sanctuary

Slip out of your daily routine into time wrapped in nature's grace. Many women are used to being caretakers. This retreat is designed to give an expansive time for rest and self-nurture. Optional professional massage and body-work, nature walks, journaling, and other connective activities.

Trees of the Eastern Forest

August 20-24, 2012 - Beechcliff Learning Center at the Highlands Nature Sanctuary

Tree identification, ecology, succession, and natural history. This holistic look at trees will allow graduates to identify almost all of the trees from New York to Tennessee. Outdoor field course with Nancy Stranahan, expert naturalist and director of the Arc of Appalachia.
