We are happy to announce that two of our eight
campaign properties are now completed:
Spargur Lane – Gateway to the Rocky Fork Gorge
Acres: 2 Total Cost: $37,200 Balance to Raise: COMPLETED!!!
Earlier in 2015 we had the privilege of purchasing the gateway to the Highlands Nature Sanctuary on Cave Road and Highway 50, a property we have been wanting to secure for 20 years. An email campaign raised the money in just three short weeks, and we are now its proud owner. Since that time, by synchronicity, a second critical Sanctuary entrance came up for sale this year – this one located at the head of Spargur Lane on State Route 753. The Spargur Lane entrance property overlooks the gorge and lies adjacent to the Ravenwood Lodge. Purchasing this tract not only adds protection to the creek corridor, but ensures that the tract is not developed so close to the creek. Spargur Lane parallels the Rocky Fork Gorge on the west side of the Sanctuary and is a critical gateway leading into several potential land acquisitions along the Rocky Fork Corridor. Spargur Lane leads into a region that offers much room for growth and preservation.
Pride of Ohio Prairie- Expanding Whipple State Nature Preserve
Acres: 10 Total Cost: Balance to Raise:$24,804 COMPLETED!!!
Pride of Ohio Prairie protects a globally rare shortgrass prairie ecosystem within Whipple State Nature Preserve. Perched on a rocky steep hillside, this natural opening in the forest has one of the highest biodiversity of plants we have ever witnessed on a ten acre tract of land, including colonies of Shooting Stars and Pink Lady Slipper Orchards.
Whipple is an existing 520 acre preserve in Adams County composed of six acquisitions by ODNR. It is located roughly halfway between West Union and the Ohio River. The preserve has a mosaic of various limestone karst landscapes, including sheltered mesic glens densely carpeted in wildflowers, limestone bluffs, dry ridgetops of oak-hickory forests, and classic prairie openings with many rare and unusual species. Some of the forest cover is high quality mature woods, with specimens of impressively large trees.
The Arc has voluntarily added the Pride of Ohio Prairie to the Whipple State Nature Preserve management unit. Read more about Pride of Ohio.
