Butterfly Course Schedule

 

Thursday, June 27:

5:00 pm on: Check in to the Ohio Star Retreat Center or other assigned lodging 

7:15 pm: Introduction to the butterfly groups and families – Please gather at 7:15. We will begin our course at 7:30 pm sharp. Our leader, John Howard, will help sharpen our focus on the groups and families of butterflies we will encounter in the field on Friday, Saturday, and if you choose, Sunday as well. The discussion includes morphology, life histories, phenology, and more. 

Friday, June 28:

7:30 AM: Breakfast

All day: Field trips to Kamama Prairie Preserve, Adams Lake State Park, and Adams County roadsides, an area regionally famous for its quantity and variety of butterflies. Lunch will be packed and carried into the field.

6:00 pm: Dinner at the Ohio Star Retreat Center

Evening Program: Review of the Butterflies we Learned today. Then, weather permitting, just for fun – afterward we will go outside and enjoy a bird’s eye view of beauty and variety to be discovered in the night flying cousins of the butterflies – the moths.

 

Saturday, June 29:

7:30 AM: Breakfast

All Day Field Trips: Under the patient guidance of leader John Howard registrants will participate in a North American Butterfly Association (NABA) butterfly count. Utilizing the tools and knowledge garnered in the field on Friday hone those skills and help gather important data used to monitor the health of our lepidopteran friends. Lunch will be packed and carried into the field.

5:00 PM: Review and Butterfly ID Quiz. After dinner registrants have the option of returning home or staying one more night. Those who opt to stay for Sunday can choose to participating in a second NABA Butterfly count (See Sunday for details. To arrange an extra night of lodging at Ohio Star Retreat, please inquire directly with John and Tina Howard at 937-544-4024, 

6:00 PM:  Supper at Ohio Star Retreat Center

 Sunday, June 30 (Optional and on your own):

9:30 AM: Join Shawnee State Park Naturalist Jenny Richards and fellow lepidoptera enthusiasts  for a second NABA butterfly count hosted by the Shawnee Nature Club. Meet at the Shawnee State Park Lodge parking lot.
